KARA submits comment to EPA on importance of maintaining Dimethoate registration

On June 23, 2024, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced a proposed interim registration review and decision for dimethoate pesticide as required by the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act, 7 U.S.C. 136a(g).

EPA published a notice of its interim decision for public review and comment. As set forth in its interim decision, EPA determined that the benefits of the use of dimethoate on crops such as corn, soybeans, and wheat, were low.

As such, EPA proposes to remove dimethoate label registration for use of the product on those crops. If this interim decision were to become final, agricultural producers would no longer be able to use dimethoate on corn, soybeans, and wheat.

On Thursday, August 22, 2024, KARA and Kansas Grain and Feed Association (KGFA) submitted joint comments to EPA which state that dimethoate remains an important part of modern production agriculture and that the ability to use this safe and reliable crop protection product has far reaching implications on Kansas agriculture and the Kansas economy. EPA’s proposed decision in this interim registration review would directly, and negatively, impact Kansas farmers as well as members of KARA and KGFA.

The associations requested that, in its final registration review decision on this matter, EPA retain registration for the use of dimethoate on corn, soybeans, spring wheat, and winter wheat, and continue to allow this important crop protection product to be made available to Kansas farmers.

The associations’ comment, available via the button below, has been submitted to EPA. Once the agency has posted the comment, it may viewed on Regulations.gov using Comment Tracking Number m05-pfzp-trv1.
